Studying at the Department of Maritime Studies, Systems Engineering and Logistics

The knowledge provided in the Master’s degree course "Operation and Management of Maritime Systems" prepares the graduate excellent for starting work life in leadership positions, where advanced knowledge, lateral economic thinking and soft skills are essential.

Your qualifications
In this Master’s degree course, students can deepen their specific knowledge and expand it in additional subjects. It is possible to choose a specialisation from several compulsory elective modules.
The aim is to qualify graduates so that they
- have a broad scientific base and specialist knowledge necessary for the transition to professional practice
- have analytical, networked thinking skills in the development of solutions to technical, economic and organizational problems
- are able to cooperate with professional colleagues and other professionals in the maritime sector, to seek solutions in the critical discourse, to work in a team and to convincingly represent their work to the outside world
- are able to act methodically and independently, socially responsible and environmentally conscious
The course of study aims to prepare for executive functions in the area of maritime systems in a professional, application-oriented and methodical way. Building on a first qualifying degree in an either economic or engineering course of study knowledge and ability for the management of maritime systems are deepened.
The main focus is on safe and efficient management of these systems, the economical, logistical and legal frameworks and connections as well as the area of soft skills.
Based on the managers tasks of a maritime company or a company related to the maritime industry you are given the ability to apply scientific methods and ways of working – next to the necessary special knowledge for your transition to professional life. Correspondingly the education is focused on independent scientific work.
The students are expected to be able to creatively develop alternative actions by themselves or in teams and to choose the optimal action alternative under consideration of the company’s targets and enforce those - based on their own analysis. The training needed therefore is made on the one hand in laboratory and simulator tutorials and on the other hand by processing case studies and complex projects in small groups.
The concept of the studies represents high demands on the students in terms of motivation, initiative and independence. Especially during processing case studies in small groups the students are placed in unusual situations to get used open and creatively to new conditions. At the same time social skills and communicative competences are encouraged.
At the end of studies the students should oversee the connections between their subject areas during studies and be able to analyze specific circumstances in a pragmatic and independent way and to evaluate solutions scientifically sound and to enforce those.

With the exception of one elective module, the lectures are provided in English language.
This Master's degree course is an application-orientated full-time presence-course of studies with a duration of studies of three semesters and it concludes with the degree "Master of Science (M. Sc.)".
The Master's degree course consists of six compulsory and four elective modules, of which a total of two must be chosen. The compulsory modules, in particular, focus on the safe and effective operation of maritime systems, the legal and economic aspects to be taken into account and soft skills. In the compulsory elective modules, students have the opportunity to acquire specialised knowledge in nautical, technical or economic areas.

Application Process
Application period for the winter semester: May 1 - July 15
For the registration and application process, Wismar UAS distinguishes between two categories of applicants:
- Applicants from Germany or an EU member state
- Applicants from Non-European countries
Please follow the explanatory text and the application process for your category.
1. Registration at the application portal of Wismar UAS
When you register, you enter general information about yourself and create your personal profile in our application and study administration portal. This is the first step towards applying for a degree programme. You can change the language of the portal to english.
2. Application for your degree programme
After successful registration, you will receive an email with your access data. Within the application deadlines, you can log in to the study portal and apply for your degree programme.
3. Print out, fill out documents, send off
Once you have applied for a degree programme in the application and study administration portal, an application document is automatically created at the end. This document lists further documents relevant for admission, which you must now compile, e.g. the above mentioned mandatory requirements, the competitive formal requirements and so on. You then send both the printed application document and all other needed documents by post to the address given on the document. Remember that it can take several days or weeks for your letter to be received by our Immatriculation Office (depends from where you send your letters).
4. Fingers crossed
If you have successfully submitted all the documents, you will usually receive a letter of acceptance or rejection for your degree programme no later than 2-4 weeks after the application deadline. If anything is missing on your documents you will get a notice at the application and study administration portal, so check out once a day, if there are updates regarding your application. If you receive a letter of acceptance you can log in to your application and study administration portal and officially register for your degree programme. As soon as you have transferred the semester fee for your first semester, you are officially enrolled. Don’t forget to plan your trip, prepare everything and organise a place in one of our student dorms.
Nationals from Non-EU countries apply for the Master programme Operation and Management of Maritime Systems from 1st May until 15th July for winter intake and from 1st December until 15th January for summer intake via uni-assist.
Non-EU prospective students without any German university entrance certificate or who haven't graduated from a German institution of higher education yet have to apply for the Master programme Operation and Management of Maritime Systems via the University Application Service for International Students (UNI-ASSIST).
The date of receipt of all documents as well as the processing fee for uni assist are of essential importance. The Processing fee of uni assist accounts € 75 (or € 30 for every other university). Here, you find information on the payment methods.
To guarantee a rapid processing, the chance to answer open questions, request missing documents at due date, we suggest to apply as soon as possible. Please keep in mind that an incomplete application can not be processed by uni assist!
The processing through uni assist can take several weeks. In the meantime, please do not inquire about your application status. You will be informed as soon as a decision has been made.
